Nutrient

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for the vegetative growth of cannabis, ensuring strong, green plants with robust foliage development.

What you should know

Nitrogen (N) is one of the key macronutrients in cannabis cultivation and plays a crucial role in vegetative growth. It is a main component of chlorophyll, amino acids, and proteins, and is therefore directly responsible for photosynthesis and cell development.

In a living soil system, nitrogen is not directly “fed” but is mineralized from organic matter by microorganisms and made available to plants. This means that its availability is heavily dependent on soil biology, moisture, and temperature.

A healthy nitrogen cycle ensures vigorous, dark green plants with rapid development. At the same time, nitrogen is one of the most common reasons for problems in cultivation, as both deficiency and excess can have massive impacts.

During the growth phase, the demand is particularly high. However, nitrogen should be reduced during flowering, as excessive amounts can negatively affect bud development.

Why that matters

  • Excessive nitrogen application → soft tissue, pest susceptibility
  • Do not reduce nitrogen during flowering
  • Focusing solely on fertilizer instead of soil biology
  • Overwatering → nitrogen leaching
  • Incorrect interpretation of deficiency vs. natural leaf senescence

Common mistakes

  • Excessive nitrogen application → soft tissue, pest susceptibility
  • Do not reduce nitrogen during flowering
  • Focusing solely on fertilizer instead of soil biology
  • Overwatering → nitrogen leaches out
  • Incorrect interpretation of deficiency vs. natural leaf senescence
