Unlike underwatering, where leaves appear dry and thin, with overwatering they are often plump (turgid) but still hang heavily. The substrate remains wet for days, and a greenish algal film or a musty smell often develops on the surface.

Overwatering prevents gas exchange in the substrate. Roots need oxygen to absorb nutrients; if this is lacking, the root hairs die off (root rot). The plant then can no longer transport moisture upwards, despite standing water.

What is often really behind it

Water problems are rarely caused by too much or too little water alone. Oxygen supply, substrate structure, watering rhythm, and activity in the root zone are crucial. If the soil environment is permanently too wet, too dense, or microbiologically unstable, not only root growth but also the plant's entire nutrient uptake suffers. In a living soil system, water management is therefore always a matter of soil life, air pores, and biological balance.

The right treatment

To save the plant, the oxygen supply to the root area must be restored immediately. First step: Stop watering completely and gently squeeze the sides of the pot (for plastic pots) to loosen the substrate and create air channels. In case of severe rot, the plant must be carefully removed from its pot.

Using sterilized scissors, remove all brown, mushy root parts until only firm, white tissue is visible. Replant it in fresh, airy soil (ideally with 20-30% perlite). For the next 7-10 days, water very sparingly to stimulate the formation of new root hairs.

In the future, use fabric pots (Air-Pots) to systemically prevent waterlogging, and only water again when the pot feels noticeably lighter due to evaporated water.
