Kältestress zeigt sich oft weniger spektakulär als Hitzestress, bremst die Pflanze aber massiv aus. Typisch sind sehr langsames Wachstum, dunkel wirkendes Laub, violett verfärbte Blattstiele oder Stängel und Mangelbilder, obwohl eigentlich genug Nährstoffe im System sein können. Im Gegensatz zu echtem Phosphormangel oder einem klassischen Lockout sitzt die Ursache hier oft nicht primär im Nährstoffangebot, sondern in zu kalten Wurzeln, kalter Nachtluft oder insgesamt trägem Stoffwechsel. Gerade im unteren Temperaturbereich wirkt die Pflanze oft „festgehalten“ statt akut verbrannt oder welk.

Air or root temperatures that are too low, strong day-night fluctuations, cold window sills, unheated grow rooms, cold irrigation water, or late cold spells outdoors.
Low temperatures slow down metabolism and nutrient uptake, and in humid conditions, they also increase the risk of disease.

What is often really behind it

Environmental stress often causes symptoms that resemble deficiency, disease, or over-fertilization. Too much heat, cold, or light throws metabolism, transpiration, and growth out of balance, which can lead to visible secondary problems even though the actual cause lies in the climate. Those who prematurely focus only on fertilizer often treat the symptom rather than the trigger. When in doubt, the environment must first be stabilized before a plant can react properly again.

More fertilizer usually does little good if the plant is simply too cold. The sustainable solution is to stabilize the root zone and the climate.

Living soil plays into your hands here: a well-structured, humus-rich substrate with mulch buffers fluctuations better than bare, sterile soil.

Avoid ice-cold watering water and direct cold zones on the floor or window.

Outdoors, choosing the right location, wind protection, and stable, active soil can help.

If cold temperatures trigger deficiency symptoms, first improve the temperatures and calm the soil instead of blindly re-fertilizing. Once the metabolism is back up and running, many subsequent problems in new growth will disappear on their own or can be assessed much more clearly.
