Boron Deficiency (B)

📍
New leaves / Growing tips, Stems / Petioles
📈
Deformed / crippled new growth, Growth arrest / stagnation, Very slow growth, Gradually worsened
Curled leaf tips Curled / deformed new growth Necroses / dead tissue Brown rust spots Dry / paper-like spots
⚠️ Verwechslungsgefahr

Boron is an immobile nutrient, so symptoms only appear at the shoot tips. New leaves grow twisted or asymmetrically, and the growth tip may turn brown and die. Stems become brittle and hollow, which can be felt when gently bending them.

Ursachenforschung: Was ist passiert?

Often caused by extreme dry periods in the substrate or a high pH value (above 7.0), which chemically binds boron in the soil.

Systemische Einordnung

What is often really behind it

A deficiency is often a problem of availability. A visible deficiency does not automatically mean that this nutrient is absent in the substrate. Often, absorption in the root zone is disrupted by pH fluctuations, excessive moisture, cold, or an unstable soil environment. Especially in the living soil approach, it is therefore not about hastily addressing symptoms with more fertilizer, but about carefully assessing the availability and balance in the soil.

Grow Lab expert solution

The right treatment

Boron is essential for cell division and the stability of cell walls in your cannabis plants. If you suspect a boron deficiency, immediately adjust the pH of your irrigation water to 6.2 (soil) or 5.8 (hydro).

A brief flush of the medium with a weakly diluted complete fertilizer solution containing micronutrients usually resolves the problem. Make sure your pots never completely dry out, as boron uptake immediately stops in dry soil.

Be careful: Boron should never be overdosed, as the toxicity threshold for cannabis is very narrow. A healthy soil life with mycorrhizae helps the plant absorb boron better even under difficult conditions. Once new shoots grow symmetrically again and stems remain flexible, the deficiency is resolved.
