Bud rot differs from mildew primarily in that the flower rots from the inside out. Often, individual small sugar leaves on a thick bud suddenly die or turn yellow within a short period. When bent open, brown, gray, or mushy tissue is visible inside. Compared to normal ripening or merely discolored pistils, the tissue is soft, dead, or already moldy. Mildew tends to sit on the surface; bud rot destroys the flower structure from within.

In an organic approach, prevention is key: good air circulation, clean thinning, drier late flowering, no consistently wet flowers, and overall a resilient, low-stress crop.

Living soil helps indirectly because strong, balanced plants grow more robustly, but it doesn't replace hygiene during flowering. Avoid frantic spraying with harsh agents directly onto the flowers now. Focus on removal, climate, airflow, and dry conditions.
