Strongly resembles magnesium deficiency, but primarily affects the young, upper leaves. The leaf veins remain green while the tissue between them turns yellow (interveinal chlorosis). Unique are the small, brown spots that can spread over the entire leaf surface.

Almost always, a too high pH value in the substrate (over 6.5 in soil) makes manganese insoluble. Over-fertilization with iron can also block the manganese balance.

What is often really behind it

A deficiency is often a problem of availability. A visible deficiency does not automatically mean that this nutrient is absent in the substrate. Often, absorption in the root zone is disrupted by pH fluctuations, excessive moisture, cold, or an unstable soil environment. Especially in the living soil approach, it is therefore not about hastily addressing symptoms with more fertilizer, but about carefully assessing the availability and balance in the soil.

The right treatment

Manganese is crucial for nitrogen metabolism and oxygen production during photosynthesis. Since this deficiency is almost exclusively caused by an incorrect pH value, the Growlab solution primarily involves pH correction.

Lower the pH of your irrigation water to 6.0 to 6.2 (for soil) or 5.5 to 5.8 (for coco/hydro). Often, a single flush of the medium with this corrected solution is enough to make the locked-up manganese available again.

If you are growing with very hard tap water, regular pH adjustment is mandatory, as manganese precipitates immediately at alkaline values. Foliar feeding with a trace element mix can quickly turn the affected tips green again.

Be careful not to overdo manganese in isolation, as it interacts closely with iron and zinc. A stable soil life also helps keep these micronutrients available even with slight pH fluctuations.
